Operation K #2: Habits
#korean안녕하세요 여러분!
It’s been about 3 weeks since the Operation K #1 blog post. This part isn’t about Korean itself, but rather about learning. I decided to write about the thing that keeps language learning moving—habit.
I noticed that I struggle with consistency a lot. I review my Anki cards daily, but I struggle to review the grammar lessons and do immersion. I do progress vocabulary-wise, but that’s not the engine of the language learning process.
Thus, I decided to look for ways to improve.
One of the obvious ways is scheduling a concrete period of time during the day dedicated purposefully to a specific activity. This seems to work for some people, but, personally, I don’t like having very specific time blocks.
Trigger-Action Plans (TAPs) seemed to be much more suitable for me. I usually do Anki in the morning, right after taking a cold shower. This is actually why doing Anki stuck—it was naturally integrated into the automatic part of my brain via a trigger: taking a shower. So the solution is creating TAPs for other activities. Currently, I read the grammar lessons right after doing Anki. Comprehensible input is a bit trickier since it requires 40–50 minutes of my time, which I don’t really want taking up most of my morning energy, so I’m trying to do that after eating dinner.
Anyway, consistency is the key!
